Sun Protection 101: Understanding the Basics of Effective Sunscreen

Last updated:

Sunscreens are the most important part of a skincare routine. Whether it’s an office day or a vacation, sunscreens are always an essential companion. But sometimes it can be confusing to know which one to use, right?

In this blog, we will delve into the basic understanding of effective sunscreen and how it’s essential for our skin.

What does SPF mean?

The full form of SPF is Sun protection factor which is used to measure a sunscreen’s ability to protect skin against UVB rays and therefore protect skin from sunburn.

SPF 15 blocks about 93%, SPF 30 blocks about 97%, and SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB rays.

Difference between UVA and UVB rays

UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin which can cause premature aging. UVB rays, on the other hand, affect the outer layer of skin primarily which can cause sunburns

This is why one should look for broad-spectrum sunscreens when buying one for the complete protection of skin from both of these rays.

Factors to consider before buying Sunscreen

Before buying sunscreen there are various factors that you should consider like -

1.Skin Type: For combination and oily skin types, use lightweight, oil-free sunscreens. Sunscreens with moisturizing components, such as sunscreen lotion, should be used for dry and normal skin types. Gel sunscreen is recommended for those with oily skin.It is advised to use cream sunscreens for sensitive or dry skin, and gel sunscreen for combination skin types.

2.SPF Level: Choose a sun protection sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher for adequate protection from sun.

3.Broad- spectrum: Look for a sunscreen that provides a broad spectrum that is nothing but protection from both UVA and UVB rays.

4.Components: consider checking the components of sunscreen if you have sensitive skin to avoid any skin issues.

5.Water resistance: Consider a water resistant sunscreen to offer long lasting protection from the sun if you are a swimmer.

How to apply Sunscreen effectively

  1. Use sunscreen generously to cover the whole exposed skin. Almost one ounce of sunscreen is needed to cover the entire body and for face 2 finger length amount of sunscreen should be applied for ample protection
  2. Apply sunscreen at least 15-20 minutes before going out in the sun so that the sunscreen fully absorbs in the skin
  3. Reapply sunscreen after every 2-3 hours for proper protection
  4. Don’t neglect to apply sunscreen on cloudy days as UV rays can penetrate through clouds and cause damage to your skin even if it’s not a sunny day
  5. If you want to wear makeup, apply sunscreen evenly ,wait for it to absorb, and then apply makeup.

Conclusion

Sunscreen is a crucial aspect of your skincare routine and by choosing the right sunscreen for your skin type and also applying it regularly and properly you can reduce the risk of sunburn, premature aging, and even skin cancer.
