Let’s talk about one of our favourite and most commonly heard skin care ingredient, hyaluronic acid.
What is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a glossy gel like substance which makes the skin look dewy and hydrated. Simply put it is a water-based moisturiser for the skin. It occurs naturally in our body, in our skin, eyes and connective tissues.
How does it work on the skin?
It is a ‘humectant’ - which means it absorbs the water from the environment around you and keeps the water on your skin to make it look ‘plump’. Thus, it is a highly powerful moisturizer.
What skin problems does it treat?
Being a highly powerful moisturizer, which is also non-oily, it works on any skin type giving the necessary hydration. Depending on your need you can use up to 2% Hyaluronic acid on your skin on a daily basis in lieu of a moisturizer.
When to use it?
It can be used both morning and evening, before sunscreen, just like any moisturizer.
Which skin types should use it?
All skin types can use it. Dry/ sensitive skin should look for HA creams. Oily skin should look for water based serums.
How to use it?
Can be used in both serum or cream form, though serum has more concentrate of Hyaluronic acid and works better. You can use the serum as-is on a damp skin, or mix it with other actives or use in the place of a toner or mix it with moisturizer. There is no fool proof way how it would work on your skin, depending on the skin type and the atmospheric conditions.
