Cleansing your face is the first and a non-negotiable step for any skincare routine especially when you go out and use makeup or sunscreen. Cleansing balm and micellar water have been the two most picked-out products for this step. But what exactly is the difference between these two and how do we decide which one to choose and why? In this blog, we will discuss all the differentiating factors between these two and help you decide which one can be the best makeup remover for you!

What is a cleansing balm?

A cleansing balm is a cleanser with a thick waxy, balm-like texture and is generally made up of butters and oils. Cleansing balms melt into an oil when warmed on the skin and hence dissolve makeup and sunscreen effectively. After clearing the skin, when water is added, the cleansing balm is converted into a milk-like consistency liquid which can be easily rinsed off afterward by using water.

What is micellar water?

Micellar water is generally made up of mild surfactants and micelles. These micelles attract and remove makeup, dirt, or any kind of impurities without the need to rinse off with water afterward.

Comparison between cleansing balm and micellar water

Efficacy in removing makeup:

Cleansing balm: Face cleansing balm is more effective when it comes to removing stubborn water proof makeup or heavy sunscreens.

Micellar water: It is great for removing light makeup but can’t remove waterproof or long-lasting makeup.

Convenience:

Cleansing balm: Cleansing balm requires massaging the product on your face and then rinsing it off with water. While it takes a bit more time, it deeply cleanses your skin.

Micellar water: There is no need to rinse off with water after using micellar water and hence is time-saving but it doesn’t deeply cleanse your skin.

Nourishment:

Cleansing balm: Cleansing balm usually contains nourishing ingredients like butter so it soothes the skin along with cleansing it.

Micellar water: Micellar water is hydrating but doesn’t necessarily provide nourishment to the skin.

When to use cleansing balm vs. micellar water

Use cleansing balm when:

  •         You have to remove stubborn waterproof makeup or heavy sunscreen
  •         When you want to deeply cleanse your skin
  •         At night time routine because of all the impurities/ makeup left throughout the day on your face needs to be removed before going to bed for healthier skin.

Use micellar water when:

  •         For refreshing your skin throughout the day
  •         In the morning routine, there are not many impurities on the face in the morning.
